Newmarket Holidays sees rise in late booking short-haul demand

A “significant” increase in demand for short-haul holidays across Europe and the UK has been reported by Newmarket Holidays, with a greater volume of late bookings.

The escorted tour specialist has seen bookings come in later in 2024, compared with those for long-haul being made further in advance than previous years.

Short-haul destinations are dominating the operator’s top 10 offerings with Italy leading the way with 9% growth in customer numbers.

Three Italian tours – to Portofino, Florence & Tuscany; Puglia & the South, and Capri, Pompeii & the Amalfi Coast – continually rank among the best sellers.

Other group tours that have been consistently popular since the start of the year include Dubrovnik, Montenegro & the Dalmatian Coast; Seville, Granada & Classic Spain; Krakow; Lapland’s one day Santa experience, and a Scottish Highlands tour by rail.

Head of trade sales Richard Forde said: “Our booking data since the start of this year shows that travellers are continuing to book short haul holidays that offer a mix of convenience, culture and unparalleled experiences, but they are booking later than previous years.

“They’re attracted by prices that are more affordable, the convenience of flying from regional airports and the comfort of shorter flight times.”

He added: ”Italy keeps growing in popularity and its appeal lies in its good weather, culinary delights, cultural and historical richness, friendly locals and diverse landscapes. We’re continuing to support agents with new tours that enhance and expand out Italian tour collection and offer fresh experiences to new and returning customers.”
