Fire shuts Rome Ciampino airport

Flights to the Italian capital are being diverted after a fire closed Rome Ciampino airport.

Services are being re-routed to and from Rome Fiumicino airport as a result.

Aeroporti di Roma, which manages the airport, said that the terminal was evacuated as a precautionary measure when smoke was found in a basement area.

Neither passengers nor airport infrastructure were affected, the company said.

Passengers are being advised by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to contact their airline or tour operator directly for the latest flight updates.

Ciampino airport is currently closed following a “small fire” yesterday, the FCO said.

The airport is mainly used by budget airlines such as Ryanair.
