Sofia ‘top bargain break’ as costs fall 39%

Sofia has emerged as the bargain beak of the autumn with costs falling by 39% in 12 months.

The Bulgarian capital and Warsaw in Poland take the top two spots in research by TravelSupermarket.

Eastern European cities as a whole make up a quarter of the top 20 places for the cheapest overseas’ breaks.

The study is based on two nights’ hotel accommodation and a return flight from the UK until the end of the year.

The two-night city break destination this time last years was Brussels with the best deals at around £90 per person.

Prices to Sofia come in at around £69.85pp, down almost 30% on £100.14 charged a year ago.

More established destinations including Lisbon, Geneva and Venice, which were all in the top ten bargain autumn city breaks list last year, are now more expensive.

However, cities such as Cologne and Naples make the bargain grade, with the prices of autumn/winter city breaks to the two destinations dropping by as much as 35% and 39% respectively, year-on-year.

Other bargain break destinations identified by the holiday price company site include Krakow, Milan, Berlin, Nice and Disneyland Paris.

TravelSupermarket travel expert Emma Coulthurst said: “Following the Brexit vote last year, there are continuing concerns that the household budget is being squeezed and that the price of holidays may go up in future.

“But, our data, which compares the price of holidays across the travel market, shows that the price of going on a city break has actually gone down, for many destinations, quite significantly this autumn.

“Last year, the best-priced city break holiday from the UK was to Brussels at around £90 per person. This year, Sofia has undercut that by £20.

“It is great news that if you know where to go, a bargain break to use up your last bits of leave does not have to cost the earth and is in fact, for many destinations, loads cheaper than if you’d gone last year.

“With destinations and airlines competing with each other, it means ever lowering prices for consumers. If flight prices go down, so do holiday package prices. Hotel price competition is also bringing prices down.”
