Discover Tobago’s wild heart as it turns 250

This is a landmark year for Tobago as its crowning jewel, the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, celebrates the 250th anniversary of its groundbreaking legal protection. Its legacy still defines the island today and it is a must-do experience for visitors. In fact, Tobago’s commitment to conservation is a key reason it earned a spot on Wanderlust’s Good to Go List for 2026. And with British Airways’ direct service to Tobago from Gatwick, it’s easier than clients may think to explore its emerald icon – as well as the wider island. Flights are also available to Port of Spain, on sister island Trinidad, via Caribbean Airlines’ inter-island connections.

Wild rainforest

Main Ridge Forest Reserve is a magnet for birdwatchers, who can hope to spot Trinidad motmots, Blue-backed manakins and more. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it spans 18 miles of Tobago’s mountainous spine, with towering hardwoods and cascading waterfalls, all teeming with flora and fauna. As well as being a wildlife haven, it also has a fascinating backstory. In the 18th century, British scientist Stephen Hales identified the importance of trees in attracting rainfall, inspiring MP Soame Jenyns to champion the reserve’s role in safeguarding the island’s fertility and preserving its sugar plantations. Jenyns spent 11 years convincing Parliament to protect the forest, finally succeeding on April 30, 1776, in what is widely regarded as the oldest example of legal conservation protection in the world. Without it, Tobago would look very different today.

Plenty to celebrate

Beyond Main Ridge’s historic anniversary, clients may also wish to time their visits to coincide with one of Tobago’s many festivals. From July 1 to August 1, the Tobago Heritage Festival honours the island’s traditions through music, dance and storytelling. Come October 18, foodies can indulge in the Tobago Blue Food Festival, where chefs experiment with root vegetable dasheen. And from October 30 until November 1, Tobago Carnival marks its fifth anniversary with lively street parades, colourful costumes and pulsing soca music.
