Rise in travel job openings but overall levels remain ‘historically low’

New travel job vacancies rose again in April for the sixth consecutive month but recruitment activity is still well below pre-pandemic levels.

April’s total marks the highest monthly tally in more than a year, since the first impact of Covid-19 in March 2020, according to latest data from C&M Travel Recruitment and C&M Executive Recruitment.

Last month’s figure was up compared to the April last year – the lowest point of the pandemic which saw the travel recruitment sector almost grind to a halt.

The number of new travel jobs created last month remains considerably down compared to pre-pandemic levels, and is 69% below the figure seen in April 2019.

However, this is an improvement on the 74% fall from March 2019 to March 2021.

The month also saw an increase in new candidate registrations to give the highest total since March 2020. The number of new candidates has now increased in three of the past four months.

More senior-level placements were made in April than at any point since February 2020.

However, the total number of placements dipped last month after rising to its highest level in a year in March.

C&M director Barbara Kolosinska said: “With travel vacancies increasing for six consecutive months, it’s clear that we are on a positive, upward trend.

“Recruitment levels still remain historically low, but the industry is gradually feeling more confident and is looking to bring in new travel talent to help them with the increased demand that we all hope to see this summer.

“After a quieter 12 months, it’s also very positive to see the rise in senior travel placements last month, which indicates that many travel companies are now investing in top level talent to successfully guide them as the industry reopens.”
