Wizz Air reports rise in December traffic year on year

Wizz Air carried 2.6 million passengers in December – up by almost 300% from the figure of just 665,722 in December 2020.

The December carryings were also an improvement on the figure of 2.2 million passengers in November.

The Hungarian airline’s capacity grew by 195% year-on-year to 3.5 million seats, compared to just 1.2 million in the same period of 2020.

And its load factor improved to 75%, compared to 56% in December 2020.

The passenger statistics for December 2021 came in an announcement to the stock market, in which Wizz Air said it “continued to grow its network and improve its customer offering”.

Developments during December included the announcement that the airline has acquired 15 daily slot pairs from Norwegian Air Shuttle at Gatwick.

The deal means Wizz Air UK will base four additional Airbus A321neo aircraft at Gatwick, bringing the total number of aircraft based at the airport to five from spring 2022 onwards.

Wizz Air UK will launch new routes from its Gatwick base to 14 new destinations including Faro, Palma, Larnaca, Catania, Podgorica, Tel Aviv, Chania, Mykonos and Funchal.

There will also be new routes from Milan, Rome, Vienna, Bari and Naples to Gatwick, with those flights operated by Wizz Air Hungary.
