Peru travel alert issued over protests as president is replaced

A change of government in Peru has triggered a Foreign Office travel alert.

British travellers have been warned that protests are likely.

The updated travel advice was issued following a day of political turmoil in Lima after ex-president Pedro Castillo was impeached after he tried to dissolve parliament while declaring a state of emergency.

Former vice-president Dina Boluarte was then sworn in as the South American country’s first female president.

Castello was detained and accused of rebellion after attempting to replace Congress with an “exceptional emergency government”.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: “There has been a change of government in Peru starting on 7 December 2022.

“Protests are likely. You should follow the authorities’ advice and monitor local media closely. Avoid large gatherings and protests.”

The travel advice added: “The Peruvian president announced the closure of Congress, the establishment of an exemption government, and a state of emergency.

“The president was then impeached and replaced by a new president.

“It is a fast moving situation and protests are likely. You should follow the authorities’ advice and monitor local media closely. Avoid large gatherings and protests.”
