Travel Weekly to return to print every week

Travel Weekly will return to print on August 20 and continue to publish every week for the foreseeable future as part of its ongoing support and commitment to its readers.

Having been the only travel trade title to publish a weekly digital magazine throughout 2020, Travel Weekly will now be the first industry title to return in print format, as requested by agents.

Despite unprecedented levels of online readership since lockdown began in March, which have led to an 85% increase in traffic year-on-year and market share of more than 60%, Travel Weekly has always been committed to returning to a weekly print issue.

Commitment to print

Each year, the title reverifies its audience, and each year, travel seller readers declare they want to receive their weekly copy of Travel Weekly in print.

In early August, travelweekly.co.uk surpassed its full-year visitor number for 2019, with almost five full months of the year still to go, reflecting the need in the industry for intelligent and considered content. Page views have also increased substantially, and will pass 10 million page views for the year by the end of this week vs. full year numbers of 9 million in 2019.

Travel Weekly also expects to hit 100,000 followers on Twitter later this month, more than twice that of its nearest competitor.

Undisputed digital leader

Stuart Parish, managing director of Travel Weekly parent, Jacobs Media Group, said: “Despite being forced into a different way of working over the past five months with no material income, the Travel Weekly team has diligently stuck to its task of informing, inspiring, connecting and supporting our readers, and I am hugely proud of the work the editorial team has done.

“We have bolstered our online market share to be undisputed leaders in the digital market space, and by returning to weekly print we will show a commitment beyond anyone else in our sector.”

Since lockdown began in March 2020, Travel Weekly has looked to find new ways to engage with its audiences, launching a Coronavirus Resource Centre as the crisis unfolded followed by its Restart & Recovery hub as the industry began looking towards its return to trading.

Inspiring Future Travel

The Travel Weekly features team has continued to publish forward-looking destination content throughout the crisis, under the Inspiring Future Travel banner, to keep readers up to speed with developments across the world so they are armed with the latest information when their customers are ready to book again.

Throughout the crisis, the news team has been publishing daily afternoon news alerts in addition to its agenda-setting business:am morning newsletter and broadcasting daily ‘Roadmap to Recovery’ webcasts hosted by members of its experienced news team.

Editor-in-chief, Lucy Huxley, said: “Prior to lockdown, I was one of the many who had never heard of Zoom, yet almost five months later we have published and shared over 166 videos which have garnered over 560,000 views; it’s really been quite incredible.

“Our highest views have come from webcasts featuring industry heavyweights such as John and Irene Hays, owners of Hays Travel; Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2holidays, as well as the CEOs of global tour operators and cruise lines, including G Adventures, NCL, MSC and Celebrity. However, no-one could compete with the pulling power of travel agent enthusiast Eammon Holmes!

“Our total viewing figures have truly dwarfed those of other outlets, which reinforces why the likes of easyJet chief executive Johan Lundgren, Carnival Corporation chief Arnold Donald and John and Irene Hays have agreed to speak at our Future of Travel virtual event next month.”

Whilst in-person events remain on hold for the time being, with the Agent Achievement Awards already delayed until July 2021, Travel Weekly is more committed than ever to delivering market-leading content through the other channels that exist within the business, with its print magazine being at the heart of that promise.
