Half of people ‘willing’ to fly overseas this year

Most UK holidaymakers would be willing to fly this year if airports and airlines observe precautions such as masks, temperature checks and social distancing.

As many as 43% admitted that the government’s two-week quarantine when they return would not stop them taking a foreign holiday.

The results of the Holiday Extras study coincided with new government Covid-19 safety guidance for airlines, airports and air passengers, confirming the need for all passengers and workers to wear face coverings.

The guidance also confirms passengers will have to check in all baggage but makes no mention of when restrictions on travel to and from the UK will be lifted.

Spain is the top destination travellers are searching for, with bookings data up from 26% to 35% from previous years, according to Holiday Extras data.

Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Cyprus and Mexico follow Spain as the most popuar countries for post-lockdown trips.

The poll of 1,000 UK travellers on what precautions they would need to see before they next board an aircraft revealed that 53% still expect to fly overseas before the end of the year.

Holiday Extras associate brand director  Ant Clarke Cowell said: “The top three searches on our site are for Alicante, Tenerife and Malaga – three of Spain’s most popular tourist hotspots.

“While bookings are inevitably down on last year, thousands of people have already booked their holidays for later this year or next year in the past week alone, with Spain an even more popular choice than in 2019.”
