Travel Industry newbie

Hi,

i'm brand new to the industry but have a final stage interview to work in marketing for a major UK tour provider next week.

Does anyone on the board work in travel marketing? I'm after some advice and gudience for a presentation that i'm putting together

or if anyone has a good place to get facts and fgures for the uk travel industry that would be welcome as well!

Out of Agency work for 10 years...

Hi.

After gaining a BTEC Nat. Dip in T/T with Distinction and then graduating from the AMEX Travel Trainee scheme, I worked for American Express Corp Travel for about 5 years and that was 10 years ago and since then I´ve been the one doing the travelling and gaining experience on cruiseships, hotels, airlines and in other industries. I´m now considering taking up a homeworking position back in the travel industry however I definitely need to refresh my CRS skills, at least.

Can anybody please recommend which courses I should think about retaking/refreshing on? Although it´s a bit challenging, I´ve never lost the passion for travel and really hope to get back into the travel industry as soon as possible. I also speak Spanish (I do translation work) and basic Italian. I´ve been living and working in Spain since 2003 and currently live in Barcelona working for an English IT company.

All useful advice gratefully received.

Let Down

Last week I should have had a second interview with Ideal Cruising however I pulled out for a couple of reasons. The main reason was an offer from another cruise agent that meant I had my independence and was able to work from home. They in turn would benefit from advertising on my websites.

The day I told this cruise agent I had cancelled my second interview I received an email which may well have looked good to them but when I worked out the figures I would in effect be earning just £7.73 an hour (including them having sole access to all my websites). I have just completed a job for a company that has a £240m turnover and they paid my £150 an hour for my services and they have already earned their money back!

Anyway I suggested we go back to the original deal on the table of XXp CPC across my network or a few selected sites. A week later and now no chance of resurrecting the possible Ideal Cruising SEO job I have heard nothing, no reply to my emails or calls! The company concerned have been very clever, they have stopped me working for a competitor.

I do wonder when I shall get a response from them; my guess is next time I get an interview with someone else.

I would like to thank Carla Prosser at Ideal Cruising for giving me a tough interview and having the feeling there may have been something I might have been able to offer Ideal Cruising.

Jobs in Travel - Difficulties with Agencies

As an individual I took Drabdesign to the top of Google for search engine optimization (at the time the most sought after term in SEO).

I have different sites (most new) that are rising up the rankings for many cruise terms including top 10 for cheap cruises and last minute cruises as well as quite a few others.

I have numerous clients who are still benefitting from top positions in the Google SERPS who only ever paid me a one off fee of £250; they are there because of my self taught white hat techniques.

Yet as I did not go to university some agencies think I am not qualified enough for a junior SEO job in travel?

Has anyone else had difficulties with agencies making uneducated and incorrect decisions about their abilities?
