Things are heating up between the Advertising Standards Authority and Ryanair with the news that ASA has referred the airline to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) for, among other things, making misleading and denigrating comparisons with competitors and advertising prices that were not inclusive of taxes and charges.

Of course it’s not the first time the airline has been hauled over the coals by the watchdog. Past misdemeanours include ads that were deemed misleading and, most recently one which featured a provocatively dressed school girl.

Ryanair remains unrepentant and has itself complained to the OFT about ASA’s unfair procedures and bias against the airline.

It’ll be interesting to see how the argument pans out and how those with the ultimate power of sanction – consumers – will react. Will the negative press damage consumer trust or will the affair once again prove that there’s no such thing as bad publicity?

Has anyone got that much sympathy for Ryanair? I doubt it . . .
