I've ported this comment over from our 'Tui shops axe window cards' story - it's from a electronic display business owner, so clearly there's a vested interest there. But are his points valid? Apart from cost, are there any good reasons to use window cards these days?

"well done to TUI for finally catching up with the independent sector. Micros clients' including the likes of Regency Travel (IOM) and Sheffield Travel have been running electronic systems for a long time and have long since ditched old dated card displays ... This technology enhances their marketing power and the image they portray and helps deal with OFT demands that prices and availability should always be up to date"

When I worked for Phileas Foggs first retail shop about 5/6 years ago, they used flat screens in the window rather than window cards which had touch screen technology so customers could search at the window.  I thought it was brilliant but customers couldn't get on with it!

I think Window Cards still have a place in the industry though.  My company offers a personal travel service in peoples homes and so don't have a retail window but If I do an exhibition or fayre, I deck the marquee out as if it was a retail window with Window Cards hanging up - it does entice people in - a banner just doesn't do it!

I cant see any reason why cards would be used anymore, electronic tv displys give a professional image.

I think there is still a place for window cards, maybe its my age - But I like the opportunity to browse a travel agents window. If offers an opportunity to see things at  glance rather than waiting for the computerized display to cycle round offers/destinations etc.

Surely you agree?

The lovely picture of the First Choice Shop in TW is ideal for electronic displays. It is in a shaded position. Our experience is that the sun has a massive influence on these things. In town 7-8 years ago estate agents started trailing the electronic display after a few months just two agents where left. When I asked why the answer I received was that the agents in the sun did not get the results from it as people can not see the screen. Other shops from boots to computer shops have all done away with electronic displays for the same reason. (It says something when a computer shop goes back to printed posters). This has also been mentioned by a number of agents who have signed up to TravelTV and had to have it moved due to the sun.

My answer is in the shade fine in the sun no.
