I reckon the best city I've visited so far has to be Berlin - an incredible amount of history, fantastic nightlife and seems like a very cool, arty, laidback city. Got loads of info on the free city tour, and food and drink are really reasonable for a capital city.

It's a hard decision because everywhere's so different (I could have easily chosen Split or Sydney on another day) - but what's the best city you've visited and what makes it so special?

i'm brand new to the industry but have a final stage interview to work in marketing for a major UK tour provider next week.

Does anyone on the board work in travel marketing? I'm after some advice and gudience for a presentation that i'm putting together

or if anyone has a good place to get facts and fgures for the uk travel industry that would be welcome as well!

Hi there!

I have recently successfully completed my masters degree in conflict studies and I have two years of experience working with an international humanitarian organisation, but I am increasingly keen to get into the travel industry.

Would anyone have any advice for me regarding the best avenues to look down and how to go about finding an interesting job in the sector?

My skills and experience are in research, communications (internal and social media/website mgmt) and fundraising. I can write well an have an academic interest in various regions/countries (e.g South Asia, Iraq, the Horn of Africa and Central America). However I am aware that getting into travel writing is particularly difficult so I am keen to explore other options as well.

Many advice would be very much appreciated!

I'm looking for a distance learning course for travel and tourism, partly for my own interest and partly for a career change (from education). I have noticed various ones advertised and wondered if anyone could tell me which was more recognised in the industry. I still need to work and therefore can't attend college full time.

I am from holland and my vacations are about to begin. So I was planning to have road trip , traveling London , London, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds. I am visiting there first time so excited alot.

I need views and suggestions for traveling this country like what to do and where to go for road trips in uk?Do i need any different license for driving a car in uk and which car rental services are good to have for road trip at least 2 or three days?On fb I got some results from local guide ....suggested for rental car like

Car Hire GDS (Sabre) Codes

Hi Guys;

I sell Avis car hire a lot (mainly because I don't have many problems with them) anyway, does anyone know where you can get a list of off airport location codes, i've tried the Avis website but can only get them for the states.

I've also tried the GDS, using the most obvious IATA codes as reference points and theres just loads I can't seem to find. I can find them with Europcar no problem but i'm not a fan of Europcar to be honest

Any help would be appreciated

Hotel Fire Safety - You Decide

When you book into a hotel in Europe you have no indication if that hotel meets minimum fire safety standards, many don't but you will never know until a fire occurs or the hotel is prosecuted for failing to comply.
Many people do not realise that the hotel owner is responsible for carrying out a Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) which they are allowed to do without any consultation with an expert or local authority and it is not until a fire occurs or the hotel has a visit from the authorities that the FRA is found to be incorrect. In the UK only a small percentage of hotels are inspected each year and over 50% fail - what is it like in your country?
I want the European Commission to adopt a system of Fire Safe Hotels where it provides a database of Fire Safe Hotels that meet minimum fire safety standards such as is available in the USA see http://www.usfa.fema.gov/citizens/hotel.shtm
This system gives the traveller the choice to choose a hotel that meets minimum fire safety standard instead of hoping that the owner has got it right.

Here is yet another example of how Thomson are making it impossible for agents to book Thomson holidays due to their huge internet discounts.

I have just looked at the Los Gigantes Hotel in Tenerife which is a Thomson Couples hotel for 14 nights on 9th July 2013 with return flights from Bournemouth. On viewdata, the holiday with a late check out room and taxi transfers is £1694.00 for 2 adults. On Thomson's website it is £1522.00 for exactly the same holiday. Thomson are giving us £113.16 commission! The difference between the two quotes is £172.00, so can someone please tell me how I can book a Thomson holiday for my client without having to give away my commission as well as an extra £58.84? I would book through another Tour Operator but as usual the hotel is exclusive to the Thomson Couples product. Looks like I've lost another client to the Thomson website!

My Dream Job in Travel, What is Yours?

After getting rid of my Search Engine Optimisation Company I started to build cruise websites as a way of testing a few theories of mine. Now I have finished testing and have almost re-written my own guide on how to rank well in Google. I thought I new a lot about optimisation before doing this testing as I was in the top 10 for search engine optimization with my old website. Now though I think I know even more!

I do however realise that in order to rank for the big terms in travel including cruising, you need more than just one person; I have to build the sites, build the back links and write, as well as source the content. This would be far easier with a team of three to five people.

I guess my dream job would be to work for a company who can see the bigger picture as I see it. Give me the resources I need and a year to get things fully working and I will give results, well OK I did say it was a dream job!

How much though would I want for all my experience? I am not greedy; in fact I am a really cheap skate! I would do it for far less than most of the jobs I see advertised as long as I was able to work my way.

See I like a challenge, to me a challenge itself brings rewards. I see Google search results as league tables, the big boys like cruise.co.uk and cruisedirect etc are your Man Utd’s and Chelsea’s. Other companies are mid table teams and each search term is a league in itself. The goal is to climb these league tables one by one picking off the bigger boys until such time as you stand proudly at the top of as many leagues as you can.

In order to beat these teams you need to research them, get to know their own strengths and weaknesses in effect draw up tactics for every company out there, get to know how they play and then beat them at their own game.

I could go on and on and on and guess what… on about what my dream job is and how I would play it out, so come on what are your dream jobs?
