Alcatraz, one of the world's most famous prisons, could be opening as a hotel.
Guests wouldn't be sleeping in cells, but in Building 64 which housed the guards and has impressive views across San Francisco bay.
The idea is to encourage guests to explore other parts of the island, which according to Telegraph.co.uk, has unusual scenery and wildlife.
The Alcatraz hotel might be a long way off, so if you fancy spending a night in a cell which still does room service, check out these ideas on HotelChatter.

I visited Alcatraz about five years ago and, despite its sinister history, found it to be a beautiful and peaceful island. At the time, I was surprised how pleasant I found the ex-prison to be, well the surroundings anyway.
However, the weather that day was blue skies and sunshine. Had it been rain and thunderstorms, it may have felt more scary and ominous and more like a prison probably should. So, I would like to stay on the island in the guards' quarters, but only if the weather is guaranteed and breakfast was more eggs Benedict than prison grub.

Thanks for the comment! I've never been to Alcatraz but I imagine the first time I visit San Francisco I'll want to stay somewhere a bit more central than 'The Rock', plus I'd probably have nightmares about Al Capone!

Hi Chloe,
I have recently stayed at the Malmaison Oxford, a converted prison. The result is really impressive and they kept some good elements of the prison. I was sleeping in one of these cells inside the prison. But my room + shower was the space of 3 cells.
Later,
Guillaume

Hi Guillaume, thanks for the comment. Have you ever been to the Courthouse Kempinski in London? They have prison cells in the bar area, it's very cool idea although you do feel a bit isolated from the other punters!
