Why are UK hotels so expensive?

Britian is the most expensive place to stay in Europe, it was reported this week. The Good Hotel Guide has scrapped its "budget" category which identified hotels charging £35 or less per person for bed and breakfast because there are so few remaining.

Co-editor Adam Raphael writes in the Guardian:

I love staying in hotels. But when the bill arrives at the end, my reaction is all too often: "Crikey - can this be right?" The fact is that despite my insider status as editor of an independent hotel guide, I never ceased to be amazed how expensive British hotels are compared to their continental European equivalents.

This is bad news for the UK tourism industry, but possibly good news for travel agents who benefit from customers going abroad for better value as well as better weather.

Oli:

Travelling abroad is generally cheaper than staying in the UK- just look at a cheap flight to Amsterdam or Majorca compared to a train from London to Manchester! The good thing though is the quality- in Rome for example you can pay £200 a night for somewhere pretty horrid just because of the location.
