Travel, blogging and gadgets: what do you use?

July 22, 2008

I post this out of sheer curiosity: I've just upgraded my mobile phone to something with GPS and advanced media capabilities in the hope it'll be a good travel blogger's gadget.

Since you ask, yes it is the size of a modest fridge.

It will, if nothing else, help me get more out of location-based networks such as Brightkite (which you'll find me on as 'nath' - I have a limited number of invites, email me if interested).

Is anyone using a similar device, and has it been a help? If not, what gadgets do you find most useful when travelling and/or blogging?

I have the ipod touch and with its Wi-fi capability, i find blogging relatively easy as most hotels/ hostels have wi-fi capability. Only recently, i was writing up a review of the hotel i was staying in via my ipod in the hotel bar.

Also, I work for an new airport lounge service called Airport Angel which amoungst other fantastic things such as access to many airport lounges around the globe, allows members to receive text updates about their travel. The texts tell you where and when to check in, where to get to your registered lounge, where and when to board your plane and also if your flight has been delayed. Feel free to check it out.

Thanks promod. I got an N95 8gb and it's working out fairly well. The sportstracker app/widget looks like it could be good for sharing trips.

Your second par is off-topic and bordering on spam, however - please send us a press release if there is something you want to promote.

Promod:

Apologies for that Nathan. Thanks for the opportunity though and I'll be in touch if and when we send out a new press release. I looked at the N95 when it first came out because it had an uber amount of features but I heard the battery life wasn't great. I think they were due to sort that out though. How are you finding it? I think the new 3G Iphone is a contender for a good travel/blogging gadget. It has a touch screen QWERTY key board for ease of use and they are amazingly user friendly anyway.

Nathan Midgley:

It's ok. I got the 8gb version, which apparently has better battery life than the original, but depends what you're using it for I suppose. That could prove a problem with sportstracker - the software requires gps to be on for long periods, which I guess is quite a drain on the battery.
QWERTY keyboard would be a big plus. N95 supports wireless keyboards but having one 'baked in' is what you want.
