Greece hit by 6.1 magnitude earthquake

June 8, 2008

The US Geological Survey has reported a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Greece, up in the northwest of the Peloponnese.

Update: reports say one person has been killed, and around 20 injured. Here's an aggregation of coverage on Google News. The BBC says the quake was 6.5, but USGS still has it at 6.1.

Google map of the location below:

Here's where the earthquake hit in relation to a few landmarks:

  • Around 25 southwest of the city of Patras
  • About 25 miles north of the site of Olympia
  • Around 50 miles east of Zakynthos, an island popular with tourists

Follow USGS's whatsshakin twitter service (bit of a frivolous name, surely?) for real-time earthquake alerts.
