Hong Kong International: from disastrous opening to Best Airport awards

April 4, 2008

Quick follow-up to a 'name the airport disaster' post I did the other day, and which I meant as a counter to claims that Heathrow Terminal 5's disastrous opening is unprecedented, only possible in the UK and so on (the BBC's T5 Have Your Say has a few choice rants).

The airport was Hong Kong International, and the occasion its move from Kai Tak to Chek Lap Kok. Here's some stuff from wikipedia:

For three to five months after its opening, it suffered various severe organisational, mechanical, and technical problems that almost crippled the airport.

...and yet...

Despite a relatively short history, Hong Kong International Airport has won several notable international "Best Airport" awards. In 2001-2005 and 2007, it came first in Skytrax's World Airport Awards

Despite the bad rep of Hong Kong in terms of pollution and a string of hospital errors, it also has achieved some remarkable successes.

Hong Kong International Airport was featured as the best airport in the world for the 7th time in 10 years according to the Skytrax survey.

Hong Kong again topped the economic freedom leaderboard for the 15th consecutive time according to a Forbes news report.
