WTM 2016: UK visitor numbers to Maldives up 11% this year

UK travellers to The Maldives increased by 11% in the first eight months of the year, according to figures revealed at World Travel Market.

The numbers rose to 76,083 from 68,519 in the same period in 2015.

Visit Maldives has unveiled a number of new tourism developments taking place during 2017 to support growing arrivals, including 10 new resorts.

A $50 million redevelopment of Gan international airport, including a lengthened runway to handle more long-haul aircraft, will provide direct connectivity to a regional network of nine resorts through a new seaplane base.

Maldives TV, the first global channel of the Maldives, will broadcast travel and tourism programmes featuring news, entertainment, cooking, underwater and water sports as well as latest holiday packages suitable for luxury, family and budget travellers.

Tourism minister Moosa Zameer said: “We are extremely pleased to see an increase in visitor figures from the UK, especially as this is a very exciting time for the Maldives as we further enhance our world-class tourism infrastructure with new developments.

“We will also be expanding our accommodation offering with 10 new resorts opening in late 2016/17 and we look forward to hopefully welcoming even more UK holidaymakers next year.”
