Thomas Cook offers counselling to staff affected by ‘machete robbery’

Thomas Cook is offering support and counselling to travel agency staff left “shaken” after robbers armed with a machete targeted Stockport’s Co-op Travel.

Police were called at 5.15pm on Friday May 27 to reports of three masked men entering Co-operative Travel, in Merseyway shopping centre, central Stockport, and threatened staff and members of the public.

One of the men was said to be carrying a machete. They took a “large amount” of cash and fled in a silver Alfa Romeo.

No one was injured in the robbery and Greater Manchester Police did not confirm the amount of money – thought to be foreign currency – stolen.

A Thomas Cook UK & Ireland spokesperson said: “The safety of our staff and our customers is always our priority.

“All people present during this incident were safe and unharmed, though understandably shaken by their experience.

“Thankfully incidents like this are rare and we will ensure that those impacted receive the support and counselling they need.

“The police launched an immediate investigation and we are co-operating fully with them as they pursue their inquiries.”

Police have appealed for witnesses and describe the gang as three men wearing dark clothes and balaclavas with local accents.
