The government of Norway is considering taking a stake in Norwegian Air which would see the troubled carrier temporarily nationalised.
The budget airline’s bosses have reportedly been meeting with Oslo coalition government officials over the last week.
The meetings come after Norwegian’s chief executive said that the budget airline would need an additional injection of cash to see out the winter.
The carrier received a £250 million state bailout in March as the Covid-19 pandemic forced airlines to ground aircraft worldwide
But last month chief executive Jacob Schram warned that the government loan guarantee “is not enough to get through this prolonged crisis”.
Political leaders in Oslo have suggested that they would rather bail out Norwegian than rival SAS, which is part-owned by Sweden and Denmark, according to The Telegraph.
Transport policy spokesman for the Norwegian Liberal Party said that supporting the airline is “very important”.
Industry sources confirmed that any majority stake taken by the government would only be temporary.
Norwegian was a major low cost long-haul operator on transatlantic routes from Gatwick prior to the pandemic.
