Kuoni battles plastic waste with Stay Beautiful campaign

Agents on Kuoni fam trips will help the operator to trial water filtration bottles, as part of a campaign to reduce plastic waste.

Called Stay Beautiful, the initiative is supported by TV presenters Anita Rani and Simon Reeve.

The new bottles feature the Kuoni brand and have been designed by Water-to-Go to help travellers ensure they can drink clean water wherever they are in the world.

From July 1, all plastic packaging and bottles will be removed from the café at Kuoni’s head office in Dorking, Surrey.

And from August, all Kuoni brochures and documents will be delivered in 100% compostable packaging

The operator is planning to replace plastic luggage tags with a sustainable alternative and hopes to make small-group tours free of plastic bottles by 2021.

It will highlight hotels and resorts that are leading the way with environmental policies.

Derek Jones – chief executive of Kuoni parent DER Touristik UK – said: “This is about positive action we can take to make a difference.

“It’s very much driven by our staff and our aim is that everyone can be involved.

“We’ve got some immediate commitments to kick the campaign off, but we want to give staff the green light to suggest anything we could be doing, big or small, to make a difference.”

Rani is an ambassador for Kuoni, and is appearing on BBC One in a new documentary series called War on Plastic.

She said: “I’m thrilled to hear about Kuoni’s new Stay Beautiful campaign – doing small things and big things, to think differently and play our part in keeping the world a beautiful place.

“We can all do our bit. Nice work Kuoni.”

Reeve also praised Kuoni’s campaign, commenting: “I’ve seen first-hand the damage that plastic is doing to our oceans, so well done for Kuoni with your new campaign – even small things can make an important difference so I hope everyone gets behind it.”
