ANA unveils Japan’s first Airbus A380

The image of an Hawaiian green sea turtle adorns the first Airbus A380 in the All Nippon Airways fleet.

Pictured at the Airbus Paintshop in Hamburg, Germany, the new plane is Japan’s first Airbus A380 and will fly on the Narita-Honolulu route next year.

Known as “Honu” in the Hawaiian language, the turtle symbolises good luck and prosperity, while the blue livery echoes Hawaii’s blue skies.

ANA’s second A380, planned to start operation in July 2019, will have emerald green livery inspired by the waters of Hawaii while the third will be orange in reference to the Hawaiian sunset.

Yutaka Ito, ANA executive vice president, said: “The Airbus A380 will be an important addition to ANA’s current fleet and it will allow passengers to reach the scenic islands of Hawaii in comfort and style. The customised livery adds a personal touch that will make the trip that much more memorable.”

Nicknamed Flying Honu, the aircraft will have its inaugural flight from Tokyo Narita Airport to Honolulu on May 24, 2019.
