Finnair plans premium economy cabin on long-haul aircraft

A premium economy cabin is to be introduced on Finnair long-haul flights.

The Finnish flag carrier is also revamping the cabins of its domestic and regional ATR turbo prop aircraft.

The new long-haul premium economy cabin will make its debut in 2020 with the new ATR cabins being unveiled next year.

Increased space and comfort is being promised in premium economy along with an enhanced service offering.

Planning of the cabin design, service concept and its commercial positioning are underway with more detail to be released in due course, the airline said.

The introduction of premium economy on Finnair’s long-haul fleet starts at the end of 2020 and is expected to take two years to complete.

Meanwhile, Finnair’s first ATR aircraft featuring s renewed cabin is expected to be in operation in summer 2019.

All 12 refurbished aircraft will be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2020.

Finnair’s ATR aircraft are currently used for domestic flights in Finland, on flights to the Baltics, to Gdansk in Poland and to Stockholm’s Bromma airport. The flights are operated by Finnair’s partner Norra.

Customer experience senior vice president Piia Karhu said: “We see a growing trend of quality focused travellers who place a strong focus on the comfort and quality of their travel experience.

“Finnair is responding to our customers in each of our key markets and believe our new premium economy class will serve both our leisure and corporate customers

“We also want our customers to get a fresh Nordic experience on our regional flights. The regional feeder traffic is a very important part of the Finnair network, with over 30 000 ATR flights every year.”

UK, Ireland and Benelux general manager Andrew Fish added: “We know our customers will love our new premium economy cabin once it debuts on our fleet and offer increased choice and flexibility when flying long-haul to destinations across China, Japan and Asia.

“Finnair’s investment in new and refreshed cabins in its regional ATR aircraft will also enhance the customer experience on shorter journeys, featuring familiar colours and designs from Finnair’s distinctive Nordic long-haul cabin interiors.”
