Seychelles sees 16% rise in British arrivals

The number of UK travellers to the Seychelles rose by 16% in the year to September 2.

This gave the 115-island Indian Ocean archipelago 17,286 British visitors over the same period in 2017.

The rise came as British Airways started direct flights from London.

The UK is the fourth largest European source nation to the Seychelles after Germany, France and Italy.

Overall European arrivals in the period grew by 7% as the islands welcomed 235,640 international visitors, up by just 1% year-on-year.

The country is working on an initiative together with hoteliers and business to eliminate the use of plastic by 2020.

Seychelles Tourism Board chief executive, Sherin Francis, said: “Thanks to the efforts of all parties within the industry, we have been able to achieve amazing growth in tourism earnings.

“For a small country like Seychelles, where we emphasise conservation, it is important to get more out of each tourist instead of relying on tourism arrivals.”
