American adds London-Phoenix but drops unprofitable routes

A new air link between Heathrow and Phoenix is being introduced next year by American Airlines but other transatlantic flights from the UK are being dropped.

Manchester will lose a Chicago service, daily summer flights from Edinburgh and Dublin to New York JFK and Glasgow to Philadelphia are also being suspended from the end of September.

The airline said: “American continues to evaluate its network to eliminate unprofitable flying in the current fuel and competitive environment.”

American will introduce eight additional services between the US and Europe next summer, all operated as part of its joint business across the Atlantic with British Airways.

These include a daily connection between Edinburgh instead of Glasgow to Philadelphia and a seasonal daily service between Dublin and Dallas Fort Worth.

The move came a day after rival Delta Air Lines announced plans to extend a seasonal service in 2019 from Glasgow to New York.

The US carrier’s first transatlantic service from Phoenix in Arizona will complement an existing service from Heathrow by joint business partner BA.

American’s daily flights will start on March 31, 2019 using a two-class Boeing 777-200 with tickets on sale from Monday (August 27).

The new service will provide more than 120 onward connections from Heathrow with BA, Iberia and Finnair and to more than 80 onward destinations throughout North America from Phoenix.

American’s network and schedule planning vice president, Vasu Raja, said: “Our transatlantic partnership with British Airways continues to strengthen and provide new possibilities for both carriers and customers throughout Europe and North America.

“Our extensive networks on each side of the Atlantic are complementary and enable further long-haul expansion from both points of sale.”

American’s joint business with British Airways, Iberia and Finnair gives customers easy and seamless access to an unrivalled trans-Atlantic network of more than 140 nonstop flights between London and nearly 40 destinations across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

BA network director, Sean Doyle, added: “We’re really pleased our partners at American Airlines are launching this new route between two fantastic cities.
“This new service, combined with British Airways’ daily flight between London Heathrow and Phoenix, further strengthens our Atlantic joint business, making our customers’ travel experience even easier and more rewarding.”
