Electric car sharing scheme introduced at Gatwick

An electric car sharing initiative is being introduced at Gatwick.

Ten cars will be based at the airport for passengers, staff and local residents to reserve.

The vehicles, supplied from a 100-strong fleet run by London car sharing service Bluecity, can be returned to any of 300 drop off points across the capital or to the airport.

A drive from central London in a four-seat car to the airport will cost around £15 in moderate traffic, according to Gatwick

Discussions are being held with local councils and business groups about expanding the network further in London and areas surrounding the airport.

Ten cars and charging points are currently available on Gatwick’s South Terminal forecourt – Bluecity’s first airport hub – with plans to increase capacity.

The flexible and works both ways, so that those travelling to Gatwick from the capital can pick up a car at a London-based charging point and drop it off at the airport.

The 24,000 staff at the airport and local residents are being encouraged to use the new electric car sharing service.

Chief commercial officer Guy Stephenson said: “This UK airport first not only offers a new, flexible option for getting on and off the airport, it also improves air quality.

“Given the popular demand for similar electric car sharing services in other parts of the world, this new service has the potential to take off in the UK and we are proud to be at the forefront of this transport revolution.”

Bluecity managing director Christophe Arnaud added: “Our cars are powered exclusively with 100% renewable energy making the service the greenest and most affordable transport option to and from central London.”
