Airbus proposes to offer ‘sleeper pods’ in the cargo hold of aircraft

Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has revealed plans to install sleeper compartments in the cargo holds of planes.

The Guardian reported that the new ‘sleeper pod’ modules could be made available to carrier flying A330 wide-body aircraft from 2020.

Geoff Pinner, head of Airbus cabin and cargo program, told the newspaper: “This approach to commercial air travel is a step change towards passenger comfort.

“We have already received very positive feedback from several airlines on our first mock-ups.”

The sleeper pods would fit inside the aircraft’s cargo compartment and be interchangeable with regular cargo containers.

The Guardian reported the possibility of fitting them into A350 XWB airliners is also being looked at.

In November 2016 Air France-KLM’s new budget brand Joon proposed sleeping berths for passengers in economy class.
