Aida Cruises announces plans for new LNG-powered ship

German cruise line Aida Cruises has signed a contract for a third next-generation cruise ship to be built.

The 180,000-ton ship, due for delivery in 2023, is being built by German shipbuilder Meyer Werft.

Aida Cruises’ three next-generation Liquefied Natural Gas ships on order are part of Carnival Corporation’s ongoing fleet enhancement strategy.

Carnival Corporation has 20 new ships scheduled for delivery before 2023 across the company.

By 2023, more than half of Aida Cruises’ passengers will be spending their holiday on a cruise ship that runs fully and partially on LNG.

Ships are either fully-powered at sea or in port by LNG, which the line says is the world’s cleanest burning fossil fuel.

Felix Eichhorn, president of Aida Cruises, said: “The interest in AIDAnova, the first ship of our new generation, is enormous, even before the commissioning later this year.

“With today’s new ship building contract, we will ensure the further growth of the cruise market in the long term and will be able to provide excellent cruises for this steadily growing holiday segment in the future as well.”
