Loganair starts operations as an independent airline

Loganair has started operations as an independent airline for the first time in 25 years.

The move has brought competition to a number of routes in the Highlands and islands.

The Scottish carrier had been operating as a long-standing franchise partner of Flybe, which will now provide competition through an alliance with Humberside-based Eastern Airways.

The routes affected include Glasgow to Stornoway and flights to Shetland from Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow.

The airlines will also be flying from Aberdeen to Orkney.

Despite the ending of the franchise pact, Flybe has awarded contracts for ground handling services at Kirkwall and Stornoway airports to Loganair for three years.

Flybe chief operations officer Luke Farajallah said: “Flybe is pleased to extend its relationship with Loganair through this new ground handling agreement.

“We look forward to working with them in delivering a high quality service for our passengers that supports our fast turnaround provision on the key lifeline routes we are continuing to operate from the islands to Aberdeen and Glasgow.”

Six Flybe branded routes will be operated by Eastern Airways’ aircraft between Aberdeen and Kirkwall and from Glasgow to Stornoway.

This marks the start of its expanding partnership with Eastern Airways that will see Eastern Airways operate its scheduled route network under the Flybe brand from October 29 under a five year franchise deal.
