Ryanair claims EU first as it reaches one billion passengers

Budget airline Ryanair recorded an 11% rise in traffic in July, a month in which is says it became the first airline in the EU to carry one billion passengers.

A total of 12.6 million people flew with Ryanair last month, meaning the low-cost carrier has now taken 125.1 million customers so far this year.

Its load factor rose 1% against last July – to 97%.

Chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs said: “In July we celebrated carrying our 1 billionth customer since our first flight in 1985 and became the first EU airline to carry over 1 billion passengers.

“July was a record month for Ryanair, as we became the first European airline to carry over 12m customers in a single month, with July’s traffic growing 11% to 12.6m customers. Our load factor jumped 1% point to 97%, on the back of lower fares and the continuing success of our “Always Getting Better” customer experience programme.”
