French government extends state of emergency

A state of emergency across France has been extended until the autumn following a string of terrorist atrocities over the past two years.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed that the French government has extended the national state of emergency in the country until November 1.

Attacks by terrorists killed 130 people and injured hundreds more in Paris in November 2015.

A further 84 people were killed when a truck was driven through a crowd on the promenade in Nice almost a year ago.

A French soldier was injured in a knife attack inside the Louvre museum complex in the French capital in February and a man was shot after attacking a police officer with a hammer outside the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

FCO travel advice warns that terrorists are very likely to carry out attacks in France and that these could be indiscriminate.

British travellers to France are urged to be vigilant due to a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests.
