Honeymooners are older and more well-travelled, Kuoni reports

Honeymooners are getting older and more well-travelled, tour operator Kuoni has reported.

The tour operator has identified six key trends in the sector as it releases its annual Kuoni Honeymoons magazine, which will be distributed to its own stores, partner travel agencies and within Brides magazine in September.

The operator’s 2017 trends report highlights increased sales of villas with pools; adventure trips; two-centre holidays and short, European breaks for honeymoons.

It is also reporting a wider age span of clients booking honeymoons, with clients increasingly older and more well-travelled, and says customers are increasingly influenced by images on social media platform Instagram.

A spokeswoman said the age range of honeymooners can vary from couples in their 20s to those in their 60s or even in some cases, in their 70s.

Destinations topping the best-selling honeymoon list are the Maldives, followed by Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Thailand and Bali, with Vietnam, Tanzania and New Zealand all increasing in popularity.

Honeymoons now make up 23% of Kuoni’s bookings, with average sales values of more than £6,000 and 87% booked in an agency.

The operator is striving to become the “go to” operator for agents selling honeymoons to clients, said marketing director Dean Harvey. “We want to ‘own’ honeymoons,” he added.

Romantic trips highlighted in the new magazine include spending the night in a treehouse in South Africa to a private dinner by a waterfall in Thailand.
