State of emergency in Tunisia extended

The long-running state of emergency imposed in Tunisia since terrorist atrocities in 2015 has been extended into June.

The emergency measures were introduced in November 2015 following a suicide attack on a police bus and have been extended several times.

Tunisian authorities issued a further one month extension of the state of emergency on Tuesday May 16.

The north African country has been effectively to of bounds to UK travellers since the June 2015 terrorist massacre on the beach in Sousse which killed 30 British holidaymakers.

While Tunis Air flights still run between the UK and Tunis, there are no holiday flights to Monastir or Enfidah airports.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, confirming the extended state of emergency, continues to warn that terrorists are “very likely” to carry out attacks in Tunisia with security forces remaining on a high state of alert.
