Rival lobby group to Abta looks set to take off

Independent travel agents took a step closer to forming their own rival to Abta last week as they seek to increase their influence
on government policy.

Representatives from 16 firms attended a meeting called by Institute of Travel and Tourism chairman Steven Freudmann in
London last week.

Travel Weekly understands there was agreement that an Abta alternative was needed that could provide bonding as well as lobbying services.

Freudmann described the meeting as “very successful”, adding: “Those who attended must now check with their boards to see what their attitude is.”

Firms attending included Holiday Discount Centre, Travel Republic, On The Beach, Hays Travel and consortium TTA Worldchoice.
