The voting process
For the first time, the 1,380 ABTA members have the opportunity to vote for the chairman. Members received their forms on Wednesday and must return them by June 10 at 5pm.
Members have one vote each. The membership includes 604 agent head offices, 295 tour operators and 481 joint tour operators and agencies. To win, a candidate must secure more than half the votes.
There are no rules restricting campaigning activities. The elected chairman will take immediate office.
What does the role involve?
The chairman:
- Is responsible for chairing regular meetings of the board and annual general meetings
- Has no sole decision-making power, but works with board members and is accountable to them
- Is requested to attend events and meetings with tourist boards, the government, industry representatives and members of the public
- Is responsible for providing official ABTA comment to the media
- Promotes ABTA within the membership and to other trade bodies
- Receives an allowance, which is reviewed by the board
- Is reimbursed for all reasonable expenses
There is no distinction between the position of chairman and president, as it was previously known.
