Virgin Atlantic scraps Heathrow-Mumbai service

(10 March 2009)

Virgin Atlantic will "temporarily" suspend its London Heathrow to Mumbai route from May due to a lack of demand.

The airline said passenger numbers had been falling for many months, even from before the economic downturn hit travel.

A spokeperson said: "Despite the drop in numbers, more airlines than ever are operating irrationally and servicing the route at a loss. Virgin Atlantic intends to begin flying again to Mumbai when it is economically viable to do so."

The last flight will be VS350 on Saturday May 2 from London Heathrow and flight VS351 on Sunday May 3 from Mumbai.

Virgin Atlantic will continue to operate its service between London Heathrow and Delhi and said it would  explore flying to other Indian cities in future.
