MSC Fantasia passenger rescued after gangway collapse

(06 March 2009)

A passenger on MSC cruise ship Fantasia has been rescued from the water after a gangway collapsed due to strong winds at Palma de Majorca.

The man was rescued immediately by four crew and taken to hospital, where he is now recovering.

Strong winds caused three pier side mooring bits to come loose and the ship moved away from the quay, leaving the gangway to collapse.

The captain took control of the ship and moved it to a different port.

An MSC Cruises spokeswoman said: "MSC Cruises has lodged an official complaint with the port authority."

MSC Fantasia, which was launched in December, is in the middle of an eight night Mediterranean cruise starting from Genoa.
