The threat from fraud is increasing across all retail sectors, and travel is no exception.

With the recession set to make the problem even worse, Travel Weekly will be raising awareness of fraud in travel throughout February 2009.

Fraud: The facts

According to the UK Association of Payment and Clearing Services, cardholder-not-present fraud rose 18% in 2007-8, with losses across all sectors totalling £161.9 million.

British courts saw fraud worth more than £1.1 billion last year – the highest level recorded since 1995.

Experts believe that the pressures of a recession could lead to a rise in fraud, as businesses take more risks and criminals become bolder. Research by accountants KPMG suggests that the recession is already driving British workers to crime.
