Passengers face further disruption as Channel Tunnel remains closed

(12 September 2008)

The Channel Tunnel remains closed after a fire on a freight train yesterday and passengers could face months of delays ahead.

Thousands of passengers who were due to travel on the Eurostar today were offered a refund or exchange.

A total of 20,000 people are thought to have been affected by the closure.

The tunnel was closed after a fire broke out seven miles from Calais on Thursday afternoon. Thirty two people on the train were led to safety with 14 suffering minor injuries.

Travellers were left stranded in London, Brussels or Paris and many had to sleep in their seats because hotels were fully booked.

It could take months to get services back to normal as the fire is thought to have caused significant damage to the tunnel's infrastructure.

The source of the fire has not yet been identified.
