A domestic tour operator has brushed off comments made by the culture and tourism minister over tourism and transport facilities in the UK.

In an interview with Which? Holiday magazine, in which she was discussing the UK, Margaret Hodge said: “I agree that hotels are expensive and I worry about the quality.”

Asked about public transport, she said the London Underground is cleaner and more modern than some parts of the Paris Metro but added: “I don’t do the rush hour. I used to and it was dreadful.”

Hodge also said the facilities at Stonehenge are not up to international standards while adding visitor attractions must raise their game in time for the London 2012 Olympics.

However, Superbreak sales director Ian Mounser dismissed the impact of the comments, saying: “In terms of its impact on business it is minimal but it is not particularly helpful.

“As long as you book the right type of client into the right type of holiday, that’s your best defence (against complaints).”
