FCO warns travellers to keep abreast of Bangkok protests

(02 September 2008)

The Foreign Office is urging tourists travelling to Bangkok to keep up to date with the situation there after a state of emergency was declared in the city.

The state of emergency restricts the media, bans gatherings of five or more people and gives the military powers to disperse crowds.

The emergency decree comes after demonstrators closed down three airports, including Phuket, over the weekend as they continue to protest against the government.

Although the airports have all now reopened, travel in the country remains prone to disruption while rail service in the north, north east and the south of Thailand remains suspended.
