Three Thai airports have reopened after they were closed down by anti-government protesters.

The airports in Krabi, Hat Yai and Phuket, the second busiest one in the country, were closed on Friday by protesters who  also disrupted railways and occupied government offices.

The closing of Phuket airport left up to 15,000 tourists stranded at the airport, thousands of whom are believed to have been British tourists. Reports are circulating that some tourists paid as much as £240 for a 10-hour taxi trip to Bangkok in order to catch their flights home.

The airport finally reopened on Sunday along with Krabi airport while Hat Yai was only closed for 24 hours.

The Foreign Office is not advising against travel to the country but it is warning tourists to steer clear of large gatherings. It is also urging travellers to regularly check its travel advice.
