ABTA carbon off-set initiative faces relaunch

(28 August 2008)

ABTA has confirmed that interest in its Reduce My Footprint initiative has been low.

A simplified version of the programme will be unveiled at the association's convention in October.

An ABTA spokeswoman said: "It has not had a great uptake. It is perceived to be complex."

Reduce My Footprint suggests ways to reduce and then offset carbon-dioxide emissions. About 20 members link to the site, but other consumer traffic has been small, said ABTA.

"The biggest problem is scepticism in the media," said the spokeswoman.

Thomas Cook group director of quality and ABTA board member John de Vial  said: "Offsetting is part of a strategy. It is not a solution to climate change and consumers have not really got their heads around it. "Reduce My Footprint will take time to build."
