Caribbean islands on alert for Hurricane Gustav

(26 August 2008)

Meteorologists are keeping an anxious eye on Hurricane Gustav as it barrels across the Caribbean Sea.

The 7th storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season became a category one storm shortly after midnight last night and is currently stationed off the south coast of Haiti where concerns are growing that torrential rain could cause deadly mud slides and flash floods.

Accordingly, a hurricane warning has been placed on the south coast of Haiti and the Dominican Republic while the south coast of Cuba is on an equal alert thanks to the weather forecasts. It is thought the storm will then enter the Gulf of Mexico some time over the weekend, heading north west.

If Haiti is badly hit, it will be the second time in the month. Tropical storm Fay unleashed heavy rain on the country earlier in August and is being blamed for causing more than 50 deaths on Haiti.
