Two-thirds of Brits admit they don't understand what carbon offsetting is and the majority think it is too expensive, says research from Expedia.

The YouGov research of 2,000 respondents revealed that people are disinterested in carbon offsetting and when questioned what the term means only one-third (35%) answered correctly.

One in ten thought it meant walking instead of taking the car to work while even 1% of men thought it meant extinguishing the barbecue properly.

One-third of Brits also thought offsetting flights would cost them a large amount of money. One in ten thought it would cost up to £500 to offset a flight to New York when in reality it costs £10.

Expedia director of communications Alison Couper said: "Several misconceptions around cost and a general lack of understanding are preventing many people offsetting their carbon emissions."
