Domestic sales continue to boom

(23 July 2008)

Domestic sales are continuing to boom as more people decide to holiday at home in the current economic climate.

Hyde Barker Travel sales director Robert Turner revealed his agency is 15% ahead on domestic sales than this time last year.

He said: "The UK can be very strong and provides us with a good source of different holidays."

Sunderland-based Tates Travel manager Joanne Hagley also said the agency is ahead on its year-on-year domestic sales.

She said the business had been driven by both advertising locally and through word of mouth.

Pontin's this week revealed it has 10% more bookings year on year for this summer while overall sales are 2% ahead of where they were this time last year.

Executive chairman of investment company Oceans Parcs, which bought Pontin's in March, Graham Parr said: "In this day and age, with constant rising costs, this is clearly a demonstration that more and more people are choosing to revitalise the great British holiday."
