Government may give green-light to airport expansion, indicates minister

(14 July 2008)

Business Secretary John Hutton has revealed the Government is set to make "difficult decisions on airport expansion."

Speaking at the Farnborough airshow the minister was reported to confirm the government would not shirk its responsibilities in because of pressure from the green lobby.

He said the government was committed to achieving a sustainable balance between economic, social and environmental concerns. He also added that the government understands the importance of air travel to the British economy.

This has given rise to speculation that this could mean a third runway for Heathrow.
