EasyJet has been rapped by the Advertising Standards Authority for a national newspaper advertisement that claimed, "EasyJet emits 22% less CO2".
The ASA ruled the claim was likely to mislead consumers and ordered EasyJet to ensure such comparisons are explained in future adverts.
Its ruling followed a complaint that the advert implied EasyJet aircraft emit 22% less carbon dioxide than other airlines' when, in fact, the claim relates to emissions per passenger compared with those of a traditional airline flying with fewer seats and more of them empty.
The ASA said the claim had not been fully explained. However, it rejected a second complaint about the same advert, ruling that a claim that "Flying could be 50% cleaner within 10 years" was clearly just the airline's opinion.
