Strike at Qantas hits domestic flights

(23 June 2008)

A strike by engineers at Australian airline Qantas caused the cancellation of several domestic flights today, but so far has not affected international services.

The engineers are demanding a 5% pay rise and plan further action tomorrow at up to five Australian airports. However, strikes planned for Wednesday and Thursday have been called off. Qantas is expected to cancel at least 18 flights tomorrow.

The airline has refused to pay an increase of more than 3% and denied allegations of bullying employees. A UK spokeswoman for the airline was unable to say whether services from Britain might be affected.

The 1,500 engineers are members of the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association and had operated an overtime ban for more than a month leading up to the strikes.
